Welcome to Mid City!

The Mid City Neighborhood is one mile long and has a rich history. Most of the area was developed before 1920 and was connected to the streetcar line that traveled from downtown to Woodrow Wilson on Bailey Avenue until 1935. Mid City’s Pleasant Avenue was also on the route of the March Against Fear in 1966. Mid City is one of the oldest single-family residential areas in the city of Jackson and the home to Galloway Elementary School and two parks, W.C. Gorden (formerly Jaycee Park) and the Kevin Garnett playground.

The Mid City neighborhood boundaries are defined as: Woodrow Wilson Avenue (north), Pleasant Avenue/Railroad tracks (east), Fortification Street (south), and Bailey Avenue (west). The neighborhood sits between what is traditionally known as Georgetown to the west and Midtown to the east.

Neighborhood Pilot Project

The Mid City neighborhood is the home of a pilot program led by the Jackson Association of Neighborhoods with its partners, Operation Shoestring, Community Foundation for Mississippi, and the Mid City Community Development Corporation. Over the course of a year, these partners have worked alongside residents and other stakeholders to utilize asset mapping, helping residents gain a deeper understanding of their community by identifying and visualizing its assets, strengths, and opportunities. This approach also allows communities to specifically target needs and to organize themselves to take collective action for improvements. Mid City residents meet every month to discuss ideas and opportunities including interventions for improving public spaces such as W.C. Gorden Park, identifying and reporting neighborhood blight and street light outages, conducting inventories, and hosting clean-up days.

These efforts will culminate in a neighborhood-wide “Walk and Talk” visioning and mapping exercise. The Walk & Talks model is a community organizing and improvement tactic that we hope can be replicated in neighborhoods across Jackson based on this pilot project. Stay tuned here where you will soon be able to download a Walk & Talk Asset Mapping Toolkit as well as lessons-learned from Mid City’s work and best practices for implementing local, community-led change!

Mid City Walk & Talk

Join residents and visitors of Mid City on a productive stroll around the neighborhood! Participants will voice their opinions about the changes they want to see, explore the neighborhood’s assets, and participate in a community visioning session. If you are not able to walk due to physical limitations, a ride & talk and sit & talk option are available but limited. There will be activities for children in our kids zone, door prizes will be given away, and free food will be served.

“Yellow House” Open House

To reintroduce themselves and talk with residents about the future of Mid City, Akili and Dr. Ashlee Kelly held Open House for the Mid City Community Development Corporation at what is known as the yellow house, or "yellow church". This community center has been a great asset to the Mid City community for over 30 years and will continue to be so under the Kelly's supervision and leadership.
