10 Ways to Get Involved in Your Community

Getting involved in the Jackson community is a powerful way to make a positive impact, build connections, and create lasting change. Whether you're looking to meet new people, give back, or improve your neighborhood, there are countless ways to contribute. In this post, we’ll explore ten practical and rewarding ways to get involved in your community.

1. Volunteer at Local Organizations

One of the most direct ways to give back to your community is by volunteering your time and skills. There are numerous local organizations, including food banks, shelters, senior care facilities, and animal rescues, that are always looking for volunteers. Volunteering not only helps those in need but also allows you to connect with people who share your values and interests. Visit Volunteer Mississippi’s website for a list of volunteer opportunities near you.

2. Support Local Businesses

By shopping locally and supporting small businesses, you help foster a thriving, sustainable community. Whether it’s buying from your local farmers market, attending neighborhood events, or dining at a local restaurant, your dollars go a long way in supporting entrepreneurs who reinvest in your area.

3. Join a Community Clean-Up

Participating in a community clean-up is a hands-on way to help maintain the beauty and health of Jackson. Many groups host regular clean-up days for parks, streets, and public spaces. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors, make a visible impact, and improve the local quality of life for everyone. If you are looking to join a community clean-up, keep your eye on the JAN Community Calendar, where we keep up with local clean-ups around the area. And, start the year off by considering volunteering for the Mid City Community Cleanup scheduled for January 25, 2025.

4. Attend Local Government or C.O.P.S. Meetings

Local government meetings are where key decisions about your community are made. The Jackson City Council meets publicly on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Local law enforcement organizations, including the Jackson Police Department and Capitol Police, host weekly C.O.P.S. (community-oriented policing services) meetings to address concerns about crime and safety and to share vital information. The C.O.P.S. meetings are each week by precinct.

5. Donate to Causes You Care About

Not everyone has the time to volunteer, but donating money, goods, or services is another great way to contribute. The Community Foundation for Mississippi has a comprehensive list of funds to contribute to based on causes you care about and fund types. From neighborhood funds and arts endowments to disaster relief causes, your contributions can help provide resources to those in need.

6. Mentor or Tutor Local Youth

Local organizations, like Operation Shoestring, offer mentorship and tutoring programs for young people. Whether helping a child with their homework, offering career advice, or guiding them through personal development, your experience and wisdom can make a huge difference in their lives. You’re not only helping them succeed but also contributing to the future success of Jackson.

7. Host or Participate in Community Events

Hosting or attending community events is a wonderful way to build a sense of togetherness and unity. Whether it’s a block party, charity run, arts and crafts fair, or a local concert, these events bring people together and often raise funds or awareness for causes in need of support. Hosting an event can be as simple as organizing a potluck or a neighborhood game night. For a list of community-based events, see JAN’s Community Calendar. For an extensive list of major festivals and events happening in Jackson, see Visit Jackson’s event calendar.

8. Serve on Local Committees or Boards

Many communities have volunteer boards or committees that help guide decisions about parks, libraries, schools, and public safety. By volunteering to serve on these boards, you can have a direct influence on important local issues, helping shape the future of your community.

9. Create or Join a Neighborhood Block Captain Program

A block captain program can significantly improve the quality of life in your neighborhood by fostering communication, safety, and community spirit. Block captains serve as local liaisons between neighbors and broader community efforts, ensuring communication flows smoothly, organizing events, and helping to build a strong, supportive neighborhood culture. If you’re looking to create or improve a block captain program in your neighborhood, here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started.

10. Get Involved in Local Environmental Efforts

From improving the Capitol Street Corridor to voicing an opinion about the Hinds County Watershed Plan, there are many ways to get involved in environmental sustainability efforts. Jackson has local environmental groups working on projects to protect the Jackson Zoo, address flood prevention in Jackson, reduce waste, and conserve resources. Getting involved in these efforts not only helps protect the planet but strengthens your community’s resilience to environmental challenges.

Getting involved in the Jackson community isn’t just about donating time or money—it’s about creating connections, learning from others, and building a shared sense of purpose. It fosters a sense of belonging and can lead to positive change, both for you and the people around you. The more people who are engaged in their communities, the stronger and more resilient those communities become.

Whether you dedicate a few hours a week or a couple of days a month, every little effort counts. So, take the first step today—whether it’s attending an event, volunteering, or simply reaching out to a neighbor—and begin your journey toward becoming a more active part of your community!
