Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held for New Disc Golf Course at Livingston Park
The City of Jackson hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new disc golf course at Livingston Park on Thursday, January 16, 2025. The park, located on the property of the Jackson Zoo, promises to attract tourists and neighbors to West Jackson and Ward 5. Colonial Heights West, Country Club Place, and other neighborhoods along the Capitol Street corridor border the park. “We’ve been working on this park for 3 to 4 years,” said Sheka Epps, president of the Colonial Heights West Neighborhood Association. “I’m learning that everything takes time and patience. Instead of spreading negativity, what can you do to help?”
This project is the brainchild of a group of people and organizations who share an interest in revitalizing Jackson parks. Friends of Livingston Park, Revitalize Mississippi, and the Zoo Area Progressive Partnership (ZAPP) hosted a Work Day at Livingston Park in September 2024 to begin clearing the land and prepping the park for the design phase. Mark Sandefur, owner of Between the Pines Disc Supply, helped design the 18-hole course and will provide the discs for use on the course. The City of Jackson Parks and Recreation Department, led by Dr. Abram Muhammad, spent countless hours prepping the park for its opening ceremony. “This is just the start,” Dr. Muhammad said. “I promised the Mayor that if I was confirmed and came aboard, the department would roll out something every month concerning parks and recreation. The best is yet to come.”
Visit Jackson CEO Rickey Thigpen looks toward the economic impact that disc golf can bring to the area. “As Jacksonians learn about disc golf and as I learn about disc golf, we will also be inviting people from across the state and the nation to enjoy this beautiful amenity,” Thigpen said. “We’re going to make you really proud when those revenue receipts start coming in and those hotels and restaurants start getting full because people are coming to enjoy disc golf in Jackson.”
