City of Jackson Approves Plan for New Ward Redistricting Lines
The Jackson City Council has approved a plan for new ward redistricting lines. The decision was made based on results from the 2020 Census, and redistricting is a normal process that cities must conduct every 10 years after the Census. Ward 5’s population declined steadily between 2010 and 2020 causing population inequality across wards. The city must comply with legal statutes like the 1964 Voting Rights Act which calls for wards to have a near-equal population for fair voting before the 2025 municipal election. This change could cause some Jackson residents to have new council representatives and voting precincts.
