Report Suspected Code Violations via the City of Jackson OpenGov Portal
Jackson residents can report overgrown properties, abandoned vehicles, and junk on the City of Jackson’s OpenGov portal. Residents will need to create an account to file a report. Call 601.960.1054 to learn more.
Jackson Sinkholes and Potholes Go Viral on Social Media
A sinkhole on Denver and Long Street in Ward 5 has gained recent attention after a Jackson resident posted a viral video on social media. Other sinkholes, potholes, and hazardous streets in South Jackson (Raymond Road) and North Jackson (Manhattan Road and Serville Drive) have also gained recent attention via social media. A few days ago, a photo of a JTRAN bus stuck in a ditch at the intersection of Manhattan Road and Serville Drive surfaced on local news and social media.

City of Jackson Unveils Plan for New Amphitheater at Livingston Park
In an effort to revitalize the Jackson Zoo, the City of Jackson presented plans for a new amphitheater at the Jackson Zoo’s Livingston Park on Monday, April 7. Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart & Associates, Inc. designed the project. It includes a performance space, wetland, and pedestrian walkways. Construction is projected to begin in July 2025, with an anticipated completion date of December 2025.
City of Jackson Real Estate Development Academy
The City of Jackson has launched its Real Estate Development Academy, an initiative to equip emerging real estate developers with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to complete development projects to revitalize and strengthen Jackson’s communities.
The program will offer comprehensive, hands-on training in concept creation, land acquisition, financing, construction, project completion, and other key aspects of real estate development. Participants will work with mentors and professional networks to prepare for complex projects that foster equitable and sustainable growth in underinvested and mixed-income neighborhoods.
Emerging developers interested in participating in the Real Estate Developer Academy can apply online at https://bit.ly/realestatedeveloperacademy. April 15, 2025, is the deadline to apply, and there is a $200 fee to participate in the program.

City of Jackson to Host Denim Day in Recognition of Sexual Abuse Survivors
The City of Jackson Office for Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery will host Denim Day at City Hall on Wednesday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event’s purpose is to recognize and honor survivors of sexual exploitation, abuse, assault, and trafficking. Attendees are asked to wear denim to commemorate the special day.
Jackson State University’s “Sonic Boom of the South” Performs with Travis Scott at Coachella
On April 12, the Jackson State University “Sonic Boom of the South” performed alongside rapper Travis Scott at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. The annual two-weekend event is one of the world's most iconic and popular music festivals. The Boom will perform with Travis Scott again on Saturday, April 19. The performance will be streamed live on Coachella’s YouTube channel at 1:40 a.m. CST.
2nd Annual Miles for Mamas 5K Held in Downtown Jackson
In honor of Black Maternal Health Week 2025, Six Dimensions hosted its annual Miles for Mamas 5K in Downtown Jackson on Saturday, April 12. The event's mission is to raise awareness and solicit support for organizations that ensure mothers and their babies receive proper care. Mississippi faces significant challenges in maternal health, consistently ranking among the states with the highest maternal mortality rates.
ASJN Hosted the 6th South Jackson Parade and Festival
The Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods (ASJN) hosted its annual South Jackson Parade and Festival on Saturday, April 12. The event’s purpose is to allow elected officials, local businesses, schools, and organizations to connect and celebrate South Jackson neighborhoods. Neighborhood associations, school bands, law enforcement agencies, and other civic groups participated in this year’s festivities.
