Historical Context: LeFleur’s Bluff

The City of Jackson was originally known as “LeFleur’s Bluff.” In the late 18th Century, French Canadian Trader Louis LeFleur established a successful trading post along the Natchez Trace overlooking the Pearl River. As trade among Europeans and Native Americans increased, a small village formed in the area and became known as LeFleur’s Bluff. After 30 years of continued growth, it was renamed Jackson and became the capital of the new state of Mississippi.

Today, LeFleur’s Bluff State Park is a popular state tourist attraction nestled in the south corner of Ward 1. The 305-acre park amenities include camping, fishing, nature trails, picnic sites and pavilions, and a disc golf course. The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children’s Museum are also on the property.

A Live-Work-Play Community

Live-work-play communities like Ward 1 reduce commute times and foster walkable neighborhoods. They promote a balanced lifestyle, encourage social interaction, and support local economies. These communities appeal to residents seeking a blend of productivity, leisure, and community engagement, making them particularly popular in urban and suburban settings like Northeast Jackson, where people value accessibility.

Ward 1 is home to Highland Village, the city’s largest outdoor promenade and shopping destination with 50+ stores, offices, restaurants, and the only Whole Foods Market in Mississippi. Other shopping centers like Canton Mart Square, Colonial Mart, Deville Plaza, Maywood Mart, and Pear Orchard Village offer an array of local, regional, and national businesses that cater to the community’s wants and needs.

Arts and Education

Arts and education play a crucial role in shaping communities by empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to foster growth and progress. Places like Briarwood Arts Center (BAC) offer everything from craft-making courses to a photo studio to private co-working and after-school tutoring spaces in the Briarwood communities. BAC was founded by Jackson native Stephen Brown (also known creatively as 5th Child) in 2022 and has become a pillar in the Jackson art scene.

Many Ward 1 schools are excelling academically. Jackson Academy, located in the Sheffield neighborhood, was named Best Private School for four consecutive years (2021-2024) for Clarion-Ledger’s Community Choice Awards. Casey Elementary School, an A-rated public school, and Spann Elementary School, a B-rated public school, are among the best schools in Mississippi. Casey is #100 statewide, and Spann is #264 statewide. Revive Collegiate, a Republic Network charter school, serves children from kindergarten through 3rd grade and aims to ensure that scholars are on the path to college from the moment they step foot in the building.
