Freezing Temps and Possible Snow Expected in Jackson This Week

An extreme cold front has made its way to Jackson, and residents should prepare for below-freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow during the week of January 6 - 11, 2025. Below-freezing temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and break, so here are some ways to prepare your home and community for the winter weather.

Prep Your Home

  • Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic, allowing faucets to drip slightly during cold weather to avoid freezing.

  • Open cabinets under your sinks to keep pipes warm.

  • Learn how to shut off water valves in the case of a pipe bursting.

  • Do NOT use ovens, grills, or outdoor heaters indoors. These can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Seal windows and doors to keep the cold out. Use blankets or towels to block drafts.

  • Insulate walls and attics; use caulk and weather-stripping around doors and windows.

  • Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic.

  • Clear rain gutters, repair roof leaks, and cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or other structure during a storm.

  • Keep fire extinguishers on hand and ensure everyone in your house knows how to use them.

  • Winterize any other structure that may provide shelter for your family, neighbors, pets, or equipment.

  • Know ahead of time what you should do to help elderly or disabled friends, neighbors, or employees.

Families should also prepare a Winter Weather Kit in case of emergencies. Your kit should include non-perishable food, water, blankets, medications, a first aid kit, a phone charger, hygiene items, flashlights, and extra batteries.

If your home becomes unsafe due to freezing temperatures or lack of heat, relocate to a designated warming center or shelter. For assistance, contact the City of Jackson at 601.960.1084. Save other local emergency service and utility company numbers for quick access. If you depend on electricity for medical devices, contact your utility provider about priority restoration and have a backup plan in place.

Check on Your Neighbors

Reach out to elderly or disabled neighbors, as well as families with young children. Make sure they have heat, food, and a plan in case of emergency.

Stay Weather Alert

Sign up for local weather alerts via WAPT, WJTV, or WLBT weather apps, text messages, or a NOAA weather radio to stay updated on potential winter weather events. While extreme winter weather is not as frequent in Mississippi as in other parts of the country, it can still cause significant disruptions. By taking some basic precautions, you can ensure the safety and comfort of your family during the winter months. We are stronger together, Jackson! Let’s prepare now and look out for one another. Stay safe and stay warm!
