JAN Board Member Feature: Sylvia Walker

Sylvia Walker, JAN Ward 6 Representative

Sylvia Walker, a native of Chicago, IL, is a JAN Ward 6 representative. She also serves as grant director for We Are One UMC The Good Soil Project, as trustee for the Hinds County Library Board Ward 6, as a board member for Strutting for the Pink, and as a member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc.

Walker obtained a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree in public administration from Belhaven University. She is a retired educator but remains active with children as a Sunday school teacher. Her passion is working with young people to teach them life skills, showing them love and respect, and creating a safe space for acceptance. Walker is also a former recruiting director for a trucking school.

Walker has been with JAN for two years at the request of her pastor. “Don't wait for the government to solve our problems,” she said. “We as a community must do it or it won't get done!”

Walker is the proud mother of one son and grandmother of six grandchildren.
