Ward 5 Day: Bridging the Gap Between Community and Local Leaders

Ward 5 Day

To help bridge the gap between the community and local leaders, organizers are hosting Ward 5 Day on Saturday, July 20 at Livingston Park at the Jackson Zoo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We need the community to wake up, get involved, build trust and confidence, and give them a voice to create unity. We need to bridge the gap between our city departments, the community, and politicians,” said Sheka Epps, event organizer and president of the Colonial Heights West Neighborhood Association.

In addition to connecting community members with elected officials, community leaders, and local businesses, it is also an opportunity for ward residents to recognize and celebrate the positive things happening in West Jackson.

“Ward 5 Day is about bringing communities together,” said Epps. “Come out and meet your politicians and your city leaders. They are trying but can’t do it without the community.”

Epps approached Summers in 2022 about Ward 5 Day and stressed the importance of creating consistency with initiatives and increasing West Jackson’s involvement in community-based events. “People love to get together and fellowship. We needed something positive in West Jackson,” said Epps.

This event is free and open to the public and will include free food, vendors, music from DJ Wildman of 90.1 WMPR, and activities for children. Jackson Ward 5 City Councilman Vernon Hartley and Mississippi State Representative Zakiya Summers are hosting the event, area neighborhood associations are supporting the event, and Stamps Super Burgers and O’Ferrall Management Group are sponsoring the event.
