Hotel O Scheduled for Demolition

Demolition of Hotel O is expected to begin in the coming days. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has confirmed that all prerequisites have been met.

Cold Weather Shelter to Reopen on Wednesday, February 19

The City of Jackson and Shower Power, Inc. will open a temporary cold weather shelter on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 3 p.m. The temporary shelter is Champion Gym at 1355 Hattiesburg Street.

Residents should refer those without heat or housing to the shelter. Food and cots will be available. The Jackson Police Department will provide 24-hour security. Also, residents should consider donating, whether snacks or monetary, to the cause. Call 601.906.4112 or visit showerpower.ms for more information.

Super Tax Day: Free Tax Preparation for Jackson Residents

Each year, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free, face-to-face tax help to people with love-to-moderate income. IRS tax law-certified volunteers provide this free service with electronic filing to all who qualify. All you have to do is bring your documentation, and they will do the rest. City of Jackson Accepting Proposals for Art and Community-Based Grants

The City of Jackson is accepting proposals from art and community development groups that provide services in Jackson. The City Clerk will receive proposals until Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. Financial assistance is available to support arts and community development activities designed to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of the arts and improve the quality of life among the citizens of Jackson.  This solicitation seeks proposals with an emphasis on community exposure, history and education.

Grant awards offered by the City of Jackson shall only represent supplemental funding in support of arts projects and community development-based projects. To be eligible for funding, proposing organizations must have verifiable cash match contributions equal to at least 50% of the project cost.

For the Request for Proposal packet, contact Beverley Johnson-Durham at (601)960-0383. All proposals must be sealed and marked on the outside of the envelope: Proposal for General Funds Arts and Community Based Grants. Proposal packets must be received by the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 219 South President Street by Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. Request for proposal documents can be downloaded from the City of Jackson website or picked up at the City of Jackson Department of Human and Cultural Services located at 633 North State Street Suite 423, Jackson, MS 39202.

The City reserves the right to reject any proposals.

Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods Seeking Vendors for Annual South Jackson Parade & Festival

The Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods (ASJN) has started planning for this year’s South Jackson Parade & Festival, scheduled for April 12, 2025. If you want to participate, please make plans and mark the date on your calendar. Visit ASJN’s website at www.asjn.org to register. Thursday: 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM

Saturday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM (available every other Saturday, beginning February 1, 2025)

March of the Mayors: Donate to Benefit Your Local Food Pantry

Extra Table’s March of the Mayors is currently underway. March of the Mayors is a statewide food drive supported by mayors across Mississippi and sponsored by Origin Bank. Each participating city collects a specified food item between now and February 21, 2025.

Collection items by city:

  • Byram (rice, beans — 1-pound bag)

  • Canton (spaghetti noodles)

  • Gluckstadt (canned soup)

  • Jackson (peanut butter — 16-ounce jars)

  • Madison (canned tuna)
