Connected Neighborhoods: Georgetown and Mid City Host Community Cleanup
The Georgetown Community Neighborhood Association and the Mid City Community Development Corporation (CDC), in partnership with Keep Jackson Beautiful, the City of Jackson, the Jackson Police Department, and Operation Shoestring, hosted a joint community cleanup on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Residents and volunteers from across Jackson walked from Freedom Corner—the intersection of Medgar Evers Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive—to Lanier Junior-Senior High School, collecting trash, tires, and recyclables along the way.
Both neighborhoods take pride in their communities and understand the importance of fostering clean and vibrant spaces. “We are all one community, the city of Jackson, and with unity and collaboration, we can work together toward one common goal: creating a cleaner and stronger community,” said Norma Michael, president of the Georgetown Community Neighborhood Association. After reestablishing its neighborhood association last year, Georgetown held its first community cleanup at Five Points on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Mid City stakeholders conducted a neighborhood Walk and Talk last April to explore the area’s assets, voice their opinions on desired changes, and envision a new community through group strategy sessions. Each neighborhood is actively working toward increasing communication, engagement, and revitalization efforts to establish a better future for their communities.
“As we continue to work toward revitalizing and strengthening our neighborhoods, events like this community cleanup highlight the power of collaboration and shared commitment to progress,” said Ashlee Kelly, executive director of the Mid City Community Development Corporation and board president of the Jackson Association of Neighborhoods. “The Georgetown and Mid City communities, along with our partners, have demonstrated that by coming together, we can create cleaner, safer, and more vibrant spaces for all residents. This is just the beginning of what we can achieve when we unite for a common purpose.”
